How accurate chlorine dosing makes a difference at Eurial’s dairy

  • A Qdos® CWT™ pump treats the 300 m3 of water needed to feed for a dairy in France
  • Peristaltic pump replaces a diaphragm pump for reliable chlorine dosing
  • The Qdos CWT dosing pump helps dairy to meet the criteria of gaining the FSSC 22000 certification

Accurate dosing makes a difference

A major dairy in France is benefitting from increased accuracy and less maintenance downtime since adopting a Qdos® CWT™ (Conveying Wave Technology) chemical metering pump for chlorine dosing in its water treatment.

Eurial, the France-based milk division of the AGRIAL cooperative group, supplies dairy products to shops, catering and commercial companies. At Eurial’s Quincampoix dairy in Normandy, a single Qdos CWT dosing pump now treats the 300 m3 of water needed to feed the entire plant daily after it replaced a diaphragm pump.

The site has its own well for its supply of running water, which is used in the production process and for cleaning of equipment. This water requires chlorination for disinfection and daily quality control and Eurial relies on the Qdos CWT peristaltic pump, from Watson-Marlow Fluid Technology Solutions (WMFTS), for accurate and reliable chlorine dosing.

The dosage is from 0 to 700 mL/h or even 800 mL/h depending on the pump settings and the drawing flow rate of the installations with a back pressure varying from 3 to 4 bar. The pump adapts its flow rate automatically according to the water consumption.

Previously, Eurial experienced problems with a diaphragm pump, which was sensitive to the aggressiveness of chlorine and led to de-priming, clogged valves and clogged suction pipes. As a result, the dosage was not constant and regularly generated non-conformities regarding the chlorine level. In the first half of 2022, Eurial observed 40 non-conformities and 32 interventions, an average of 5.3 interventions and 6.7 non-conformities per month.

The Quincampoix dairy began using the Qdos CWT pump in the summer of 2022 and after seven months there were five non-conformities and 0 interventions. That is 0.7 non-conformities and no intervention per month, a huge improvement on the diaphragm pump’s results.

Reliability of Qdos helps achieve certification

Anthony Bloquel, Maintenance Manager of the Quincampoix site, said: “The staff carry out a free chlorine measurement on the internal network, at two points, in order to ensure a minimum chlorine level even at the end of the network. The FSSC 22000 certification specifies 0.30mg/L chlorine at control points in the network. A non-compliance is for any chlorine level below this value. In this case, we are obliged to open a form to declare it and carry out a corrective action. As the non-compliance rate was significant, we had to install a Watson-Marlow CWT Qdos pump.

“The performance of the Qdos pump met our demand: precision of flow, fewer valves, suction and discharge, therefore less risk of clogging of the piping.”

The pumphead detects and confines any internal leakage, preventing spillage. It is assembled in a few seconds and it is not necessary to adjust the pump regularly, our system remains stable and constant.”

Since adopting the Qdos CWT and benefitting from its reliability, Eurial has succeeded in obtaining FSSC 22000 certification, or Food Safety Systems Certification 22000, an internationally recognised certification scheme which sets a benchmark for quality, safety, and processes for the food industry.

Alexandre Marnay, Sales Engineer at WMFTS France, said: “Thanks to the reliability of our equipment and the quality of our advice, the plant was able to meet the criteria of the FSSC 22000 certification, which it obtained in December 2022.”

Qdos chemical metering pumps provide highly accurate dosing by enabling precise, incremental adjustments. They can handle applications requiring dosing at 0.1 mL/min, right up to 2,000 mL/min. By only using what is needed, chemical quantities and costs are reduced. The Qdos range of pumps require virtually no ancillary equipment and the patented pumphead can be replaced quickly and easily without tools, for fast and safe maintenance.

Benefits of the Qdos CWT include:

  • Accuracy of ±1% and repeatability of ±0.5% in dosing
  • Flow rates to 31.7 USGPH (30 L/h) at pressures of up 130 PSI (9 bar)
  • Long service life at high pressure
  • Reliable, low-maintenance metering
